B and D letter confusion and my first download!

 

We’ve been using Alpha-Phonics: A Primer for Beginning Readers around here for phonics learning. There are things I like and things I don’t like about it, but my biggest issue is that it is not “hands-on” at all. My boy loves hands-on so I try to jazz it up a bit whenever I can. This week we came upon a short lesson about “b” and “d” with a list of words like “bed, dad, dud, dob, etc” that have lots of “b” and “d” letters to get your eyes crossed.  It was a very good practice to see if my son was actually reading the phonics in words and not just guessing at sight words.  He had to slow down and look at each letter. However, it was hard and not a whole lot of fun.

Enter the “B_D Game.” Not terribly original I’m afraid, but it gets the job done. I took six of the most frequently used words with “B” and “D” in them like bed, dad, did, and bad and used them on a simple gameboard. You play it kind of like Candy Land.

Player 1 draws a card from the pile of words and moves his or her piece to the first copy of that word on the board. Player 2 does the same with a new card.  The play continues until one player reaches the end by drawing one of the three words in the final star.

A few variations include using the “double” cards that allow players to move forward two appearance of the word (they repeat every 6 spaces). This is good if you want to play more than one piece (think Sorry or Trouble) or if your young player tends to get behind.  We also play a variation where if you land on the same space as another player the first player has to return to the start.
