Quick Game You Can Play This Afternoon!

October 21, 2010

We just had my son’s Tae Kwon Do class. His teacher is really amazing, and I’m impressed by all the coordination and focus skills Pickle is gaining. They did a neat activity in class today that would be super simple to do at home in the driveway or backyard.

1) Draw 1-4 large squares (you can start simple with one square and then add to it) with chalk or some other boundary line marker.
2) Tell the child a number for each edge of the square (Start with just one and add squares as they master one). So “This line is 1,” “This line is 2,” etc. Start with one edge and go clockwise so you name each square the same as you go around it. You could label them if you needed, but it tests their memory more if you don’t.
3) Have the child stand on “Line 1.” The caller says a number.
4) The child has to say a phrase (ours was “Yes, sir”, but you could do something else) and then run to the line number that was called.
5) It is simple at first, but as you add squares 2, 3, and even 4, the child has to mentally keep track of where each line is and run quickly to it.

I think this is a really good game for right-brained boys like my son. Spatial sense is a strength of his so this helped with his listening and memory as well. It also ran the dickens out of him!
