Mondays with Miss Mason–On Cobwebs

March 14, 2011

Note: this post is part of an ongoing series. For more information on Charlotte Mason and Mondays with Miss Mason, please read the first post.

Miss Mason’s teachings on habits remain to be one of the most powerful aspects of her philosophy to me.

I read this quote of hers today:

“Habit begins as a cobweb and ends as a cable.”

I’m having a hard time getting past the cobweb part on some habits of my own.

It’s really frustrating to realize how bad you are at forming your own habits (be it taking vitamins, eating healthy, keeping things clean, etc) much less setting your children on the right path.

Let alone the deeper habits of attention, obedience, faith, and more.

So, today I am thinking about ways to turn cobwebs into cables.

There are old standbys like lists, reward systems, strings tied on the fingers.

I like Miss Mason’s recommendation of focusing on one habit at a time.  Really, it is the only way, I think.

What do you do to encourage yourself to form new habits? your children?
