Late Winter Cattails

March 15, 2011

Our local nature trail system has one branch that wanders by a gigantic cattail marsh.  I have never seen so many in one place.

We went there last week to see what the place looked like in the winter and start of spring.

We found the remnants of last summer’s cattail balloon with seed fluff still blowing out.

We also found fresh shoots making their start on floating stalks. At least I think that is what this is (please comment if you know something)

I’ll be interested to see what the place looks like summer when the cattails are at their finest in June or July.

What a great place to observe your cattails! This has been a fun project for our family over the last year, keeping tabs on a certain habitat or a certain plant really gives you a wonderful idea of the cycles our seasons cause.

Thank you so much for sharing your entry with the OHC.
